ACTIVE SCHOOLS WEEK 2020
Check out who the girls from Room 12 met during Active Schools Week!
Women in Sport Week!
We have been celebrating Women In Sport during our Active Schools Week in St. Clare's. Today we had an exciting assembly with two superstars of sport from Cavan. Leona and Lisa Maguire came to visit our school and talk about playing golf professionally around the world. They were so interesting and really nice. They told us they loved all sport and started playing golf when they were 10 years old. They knew when they were 15 years old that they wanted to play golf professionally. They have met lots of famous sports stars like Tiger Woods and Katie Taylor. They told us that they shared an apartment with Katie at the Olympics in Rio! Wow!!
We held a colouring competition during Active Schools Week for our younger children.
What an inspiration to our girls in St. Clare's.

To round off our brilliant Women In Sport/Active Schools week, we had a visit from professional golfers Leona and Lisa Maguire from Cavan. 4th class led the assembly, and told the whole school all about the activities we enjoyed during the week. Leona and Lisa Maguire spoke to us about their lives as professional sportswomen. We finished off with an inspirational song. Thank you to Ms Byrd for preparing us for the assembly.

Women in Sport
As part of our Women in Sport/Active Schools Week, we were lucky enough to have two brilliant sportswomen in St Clare's to talk to us about sport. Ms Nessa Byrd, captain of the Cavan Ladies Football team, and Erinn Galligan, captain of the Cavan Ladies Camogie team, told us all about their sports, and how they enjoy their training, and being part of their teams. They showed us what we can achieve, in any sport we may be interested in. They encouraged us all to try out sports, to find what we like, and to train and practice. Who knows where it may take us! It was a very inspiring session.

Active Schools Week/Women In Sport 2020
In conjunction with the Active Schools Committee our school is running
Active Schools Week/ Women in Sport to promote women getting involved in sport. Our ‘Women in Sport’ week will run from Thursday 27th Feb to Thursday 5th March.
We will be following the 20x20 initiative. The 20x20 campaign calls on the people of Ireland and all those involved in Irish sport to get behind female sport in a combined effort to increase media coverage, boost attendance and ultimately, grow involvement in female sport and physical activity by 20% by the end of 2020.
20×20 is also about creating a cultural shift in our perception of girls and women in sport.
Over the next week, we will be learning about local and national female sports stars. We will also be receiving information about local sports clubs in the area that we can join and we also hope to have some female sports stars visiting our school. There will be coloring competitions and extra PE lessons for classes too! We will also have our dance classes with Kevin, gymnastics with Sharon, athletics with Francis, Gaa football skills with Laura, Sumba with Miss Hughes, after school football, and of course our lunchtime walking clubs.
If we work together we can all make female sports get more attention,
recognition and the credit they deserve.
We look forward to working with you all over the next week.

Well done to the girls and boys who took part in a Shiken-do performance today for Active Schools Week!
Half way through our fun and busy Active Schools Week !
Skipping without spilling water...it's tricky!
Despite the bitterly cold weather today the girls and boys in St Clares were working up a sweat. From 9am until hometime the girls skipped, danced, ran and jumped their way through the school day.
Mr Arkins' circuits in the hall were TOUGH and athletics needed stamina. But yoga gave us a chance to catch our breath and the ice-cream van was a welcome treat. Even teacher enjoyed a 99!!!
We has so much fun and worked together as a team really well. Roll on next year's sportathon!

The annual St Clare's Sportathon took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 25th and 26th. Activities for senior classes were on Tuesday.
We started off with Orienteering with Mrs Reilly. This was followed by skipping with Mr McGovern in the main yard, before athletics with Mrs Cosgrove. Before breaktime we had Co-operative Games with Mr Walsh.
After break we participated in Gymnastics with Ms Hughes, Ball Skills with Ms E Brady. Next it was our turn to have ice-cream, which we all enjoyed!
After lunch we all took part in Circuit Training with Mr Arkins, Ms Meehan and Ms Phelan. This was followed by Yoga with Mrs Lynch, and finally our day ended with Dance with Ms Gorby.
We had fantastic fun. It was a brilliant day, and all funds raised will go towards buying new computers for the computer room.
We hope you like the photos!!!
